Asbestos is commonly found in older buildings and poses a significant health risk if disturbed. It is important and usually mandatory to hire a company that specializes in asbestos removal to test the area prior to demo. Should asbestos be found, it warrants remediation before any work can begin.
Cloth wiring also known as knob and tube wiring was widely used from the late 40s to the early 60’s. Since we have not used this technique since then, if you have cloth wiring it is likely from over half a century ago. In layman’s terms, this poses a high risk for deterioration, fraying and electrical fires.
Additionally, cloth wiring does need meet modern electrical standards and will not pass inspection. Overall Renovation runs electrical tests to ensure that all wiring is up to code.
Most, if not all NYC buildings require an alteration agreement be completed and signed before work can begin. These agreements specify procedures, restrictions and requirements by the property.
